They are like The Tobacco Institute, which worked for 40 years to promote an addictive product it knew was unhealthy. They have made no effort to work for the greater safety of all. The NRA has reacted to this problem by embroiling it in politics with its attendant agendas, such as people who are anti-government. It has become essential even while allowing for hunters and those who feel a need for personal protection. This country is becoming too crowded and filled with too many goof balls not to have any gun regulation. However, it is stupid to think that people need Uzis and AK-47s to do this. I am not a hunter and never have been, but I have no problem with others enjoying it because it is at times necessary to keep animal populations under control. Ultimately, it becomes a question of whether the risks of having a gun in the home are outweighed by the personal security that is gained. I have no problem with that I even considered it when I lived on a farm in Texas. Granted, there are those who live in places where police response time is inadequate or non-existent and it might be prudent to have a weapon for personal protection. The right to bear arms had validity 200 years ago when most Americans lived in the boonies and had to be able to fend off wild animals, but this is no longer the case. The Second Amendment was conceived when there were only muskets and single-shot pistols and should not be applicable to today's modern weapons. The NRA hides behind the Second Amendment in the same way a naughty boy hides behind his mother's apron strings when he has done something bad. I think The National Rifle Association has responsibility this tragedy and others, which are becoming too numerous to list because they more than any other organization perpetuate a gun culture under the guise of personal freedom. This is mainly because of a powerful organization in our country sponsored by gun manufacturers and camping outfitters in the business of selling Americans greater numbers of weapons. Nothing was done then nor has been done since to prevent these tragedies. ![]() This brings to mind what happened 51 years ago when one Charles Whitman killed his wife and mother, then killed 14 innocent people by shooting at them from a tower at the University of Texas in Austin. In the wake of the worst mass shooting in American history we will probably wring our hands for a few days and then do nothing about it until another nut case perpetuates the next such tragedy.
